Home Insulation and Mould Prevention: Keeping Your Space Cosy and Dry This Autumn

As the temperatures slowly drop and we transition into autumn, it's not just your wardrobe or home décor that might need an update. Your heating and insulation requirements will also change as you prepare for the cooler months ahead.

Having lived in the Algarve for the past six years, I’ve come to know all too well the challenges of keeping my apartment well-insulated. Many of the more traditional homes in the Algarve—and likely throughout Portugal—weren’t built with insulation as a priority. As a result, keeping your home warm and dry during winter can become a real struggle. One of the most common issues, aside from the occasional draught, is the persistent battle against mould and mildew caused by damp conditions.

Not everyone has the budget to bring in a team of professionals to overhaul their home’s insulation, but don’t worry! There are several effective, budget-friendly tips and tricks that can help reduce moisture and keep mould at bay this autumn and winter.

Practical Tips to Keep Your Home Dry and Mould-Free:

1. Control Moisture: One of the key factors in preventing mould is controlling moisture levels in your home. Aim to keep indoor humidity below 60%, with the ideal range being between 30% and 50%. Purchasing a dehumidifier can make a huge difference, especially in rooms prone to dampness. There are many affordable models out there, but be sure to choose one that’s powerful enough to cover the square meterage of your space. Did you know that a lot of air conditioning units also have a dehumidify function?!

2. Ventilate: Fresh air is your ally in the fight against mould. Keep windows and doors open whenever possible to let moisture escape. Make it a habit to ventilate high-humidity areas like the bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room by opening windows or turning on exhaust fans during and after use. If your budget allows, consider upgrading to energy-efficient windows and doors, such as double-glazed ones, to help maintain a better indoor climate.

3. Regular Cleaning: Mould loves to feed on dirt and grime, so regular cleaning is essential. Make sure to clear out soap scum from bathroom tiles, and never leave puddles of water in the kitchen or bathroom after use. Roof gutters should also be cleaned and repaired regularly to prevent water build-up that could seep into your home’s walls and roof.

4. Repair Leaks Promptly: Leaky pipes and faucets not only waste water, but they can also lead to mould growth if left unchecked. Regularly inspect for any signs of leakage, particularly in hidden areas like under sinks or behind appliances, and repair them quickly.

5. Allow Air Circulation Around Furniture: Condensation can easily build up behind furniture placed too close to external walls. When the trapped air cools and moisture is released, it can seep into your walls, creating the perfect conditions for mould to thrive. To avoid this, leave a small gap between furniture and walls, allowing air to circulate freely (Ideally 5-10cm).

6. Use Exhaust Fans: Always use exhaust fans when cooking or bathing to help remove excess moisture from the air. If your kitchen or bathroom doesn’t have an exhaust fan, a window can work as a natural alternative.

7. Mildew-Resistant Paint: If you’re planning to give your walls a fresh coat of paint, opt for mildew-resistant varieties or add an anti-mildew additive. These paints are designed to resist mould growth, making them an excellent long-term investment for problem areas. Look for brands that advertise terms like "anti-humidade" or "anti-bolor" if you're in Portugal.

8. Mould-Killer Products: If mould has already started to appear, there are various mould-killer sprays on the market that can help tackle the problem. However, while these products can be effective, remember that prevention is always the best cure.

With these tips in mind, you can rest easy knowing that your home will be better equipped to handle the colder months without falling victim to dampness and mould. By taking small, preventative steps now, you'll be able to enjoy a cozier, healthier living environment all season long.

And finally, don’t let mould be what spooks you this spooky season! Instead of getting haunted by mildew, focus on keeping your space dry and insulated—you'll be thankful you did when the winter chill sets in.

Here’s to a comfortable and mould-free autumn!
